Design of all aspects of Lewisham Council’s campaign to promote a new garden waste collection service.

The approach taken was to treat this as more of a commercial campaign rather than a standard council service, due to it being a paid for service. The garden waste bin was specifically designed as an attractive object that the user is purchasing, rather than a standard refuse bin supplied by most local authorities.

Our bin has arrived. It is splendidly decorative. Am very pleased with it.

The tree decoration is particularly nice!

Information was carefully laid out on the bin lids to help the user to recycle correctly. This includes a “tree trunk measure” to help see if branches are too wide to be recycled.

A campaign of posters, postcards and advertising followed the bin design.

Rather than sending standard letters about the service to residents, envelopes and letters were designed with attractive graphics from the campaign to encourage curiosity and a higher open rate.

Other items included stickers to affix to the bins to remind the residents of their collection day.
